I am Riding on a Rocket to the Moon!

Aktualisiert: 25. Nov 2020

So, I am in full swing planning the lessons for Kindergarten transport topic which I hope will be able to begin soon. This is a story and song combo that I have just created. My own children (who come in very handy for testing out new ideas!) think that it is fun and I am looking forward to sharing it with my English pupils. Maybe it could be a nice addition to other Kindergarten ESL lessons too?

Kindergarten ESL - Transport Theme

Riding on a Rocket to the Moon Story/Song

Resources needed: A puppet, an alien, a rocket, a plane, car and a helicopter and a drawing or photo of the moon and earth. (Toys or homemade props can be used)

Show children all pictures and props and ask them to repeat the words before the story starts.

Puppet: Today is an exciting day!

Narrator: Why?

Puppet: I am going on a journey!

Narrator: Where are you going? (Children repeat question to puppet)

Puppet: I am riding on a rocket to the moon! (Show moon picture)

I am Riding on a Rocket to the Moon - sung to the tune of “She’ll Be Coming ‘Round the Mountain”

I am riding on a rocket to the moon, I am riding on a rocket to the moon, I am riding on a rocket, riding on a rocket, I am riding on a rocket to the moon!

(Place puppet on the rocket and fly through space as you sing)

Passing planes and helicopters as I fly, passing planes and helicopters as I fly, passing planes and helicopters, planes and helicopters, passing planes and helicopters as I fly!

(Hold rocket and puppet in one hand and hold up helicopters and planes as you sing the words.)

I am riding on a rocket to the moon, I am riding on a rocket to the moon, I am riding on a rocket, riding on a rocket, I am riding on a rocket to the moon!

(Place puppet on the rocket and fly through space.)

Now my rocket is landing on the moon, now my rocket is landing on the moon, now my rocket is landing, my rocket is landing, now my rocket is landing on the moon.

(Bring rocket with puppet slowly from up high to down low onto the picture of the moon.)

Puppet: I am on the moon!

Enter Alien!

Puppet: An alien! Hello alien! (Children join in - hello alien!)

Puppet: Where are you going? (Children repeat question to the alien)

Alien: I am going on a journey! I am riding in my car around the moon! Would you like to come?

Puppet: Yes please!

We are riding in car around the moon, we are riding in a car around the moon. We are riding in a car, riding in a car. We are riding in a car around the moon.

(Place alien and puppet in car and drive it.)

Puppet: Thank you alien!

Alien: Goodbye!

Puppet: Goodbye alien! (Children - goodbye alien!)

I am riding in a rocket, going home. I am riding in a rocket, going home. I am riding in a rocket, riding in a rocket I am riding in a rocket going home.

(Place puppet and rocket and fly through space.)

Now my rocket in landing on the earth, now my rocket is landing on the earth, now my rocket is landing, rocket is landing, now my rocket is landing on the earth.

(Bring rocket with puppet slowly from high up to low down onto the picture of the earth.)

Show the children all of the props from the story again and ask them to repeat the words.

The same song can be used without the props, physically acting out each part of the story. It would also be nice to personalise the journey for your group adding a verse with the names of children or the class (The English Owls are coming too….. or Jack, Clare and Max are coming too….) Then have fun singing and flying around the classroom as a rocket, aeroplane, helicopter and of course driving around in your moon car!
